Pause and care for paws
Dirt build-up can lead to infections in paws. Moisture trapped between the toes can also lead to fungal infections. Make it a habit to clean your pet’s paws and dry them thoroughly. This helps to remove dirt and prevent skin irritation.
Stay alert – Skin infections on their way!
The increased moisture and humidity during the monsoon can lead to Dermatophytosis (Ringworm) and Pyoderma which causes bacterial and fungal skin infections, as dogs are prone to allergies from dampness and allergens. Use anti-fungal and antibacterial shampoos as part of your pet’s bathing routine, especially during the humid months. Keep his skin and fur dry using a soft microfiber pet towel, and monitor for signs of infection, such as – redness, itching, or sores. If you notice any symptoms, consult your vet immediately.
Do away with tick and flea trouble
If you are a pet parent, then you must be aware of the tick and flea menace! The hot and humid conditions favour the proliferation of ticks and fleas, which can cause severe discomfort and transmit diseases. Implement a regular tick and flea prevention regimen, including spot-on treatments, collars, or oral medications.
Perform daily checks for ticks and fleas, especially after walks in grassy or wooded areas, and promptly remove any parasites found. Consult your veterinarian for the best preventive treatments and ensure your pet’s bedding is cleaned regularly.
Weathering appetite changes
Dogs may experience a reduced appetite leading to anorexia, due to the change in weather. Adjust your pet’s diet as per the changing weather to ensure he is getting all the nutrients. If his appetite is reduced, you might need to tempt him with more palatable meals. Avoid giving cold food straight from the refrigerator; instead, serve meals at room temperature or slightly warm. If your dog’s reduced appetite persists, consult your vet to check for any underlying health condition.
Grappling with grooming issues
Shedding and matting of the fur is something that pet parents have to deal with often. Wet fur is prone to tangles and matting, which can be uncomfortable and lead to skin problems. Daily brushing with detangling sprays can prevent matting. Keep the fur-trimmed, particularly around the paws and ears, to minimize the risk of tangles. Regular baths with deodorizing dog shampoos and using a hairdryer on a low heat setting to ensure their fur is completely dry are effective in managing odour.
Indoor games – boredom busters
A lot of times outdoor playtime can be restricted because of you not having enough time or the extreme weather conditions. This can make your pet restless. Indoor games and exercises are a great way to keep him engaged. Puzzle toys, tug-of-war, and indoor fetch are fantastic ways to burn off excess energy. Regular mental stimulation through training sessions can also help keep your pet entertained and mentally sharp.
Take this sound advice to manage ear emergencies
Moisture in the ears can lead to painful infections like Otitis Externa. Watch for signs of infection, such as – scratching, head shaking, redness, discharge, or foul smell, and seek veterinary care promptly. Regularly clean your dog’s ears with a vet-recommended ear cleaner and ensure they are thoroughly dried after getting wet.
Learn about Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that dogs can contract from contaminated water sources. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases like heartworm. Ensure there are no stagnant water sources around your home and use mosquito repellents suitable for dogs. Also, be on the lookout for symptoms of water-borne infections, such as – vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy, and seek veterinary care promptly if you notice any signs. Don’t let your pet drink from puddles or standing water. Ensure their Leptospirosis vaccination is up to date to protect against this potentially serious disease.
Pooch pampering 101
Create a safe and comfortable space for your pet indoors where they can retreat. Loud noises, fireworks, and even storms can make your pet anxious. Use calming techniques like playing soft music or providing a comforting toy. Make sure all windows and doors are secure to prevent any escapes during frightful episodes.
Winning with deworming
Deworming isn’t just a routine; it’s a shield against potential health issues caused by parasites. These parasites, both external and internal, pose risks such as – vomiting, diarrhea, poor growth, organ damage, decreased appetite, and even mortality if left untreated. Your dependable veterinarian is your ally in this battle against parasites to keep your pet healthy.
Taking care of your pet’s health is your primary responsibility as a pet parent. Look out for any unusual symptoms and make sure to go for timely diagnosis and treatment to avoid any complications. Keep your pet happy at home with your love and affection!
