As pet parents you need to keep in mind that every dog is different and you have to respect their individuality. Follow these tips to help your pooch become a well-behaved dog!
Paws and principles – Set the Guidelines
Establish household rules for your new puppy by discussing boundaries with your family in advance. Decide where your puppy can play, sleep, and eat, and set clear restrictions. Use baby gates to prevent unwanted behaviours like jumping on furniture or running out of the door until he understands the rules. Providing a cozy bed can deter him from climbing on the couch.
Happy paws, happy life – start socializing your pooch early
Socializing your puppy early and consistently is essential for them to adapt to various sounds, sights, people, and other animals, ensuring they grow into confident and well-adjusted dogs. This process helps prevent behavioural problems like fear and aggression. Take your puppy to dogfriendly places such as pet stores and parks, rewarding his curiosity and good behaviour with treats and praise.
Building bonds with the magic of positive reinforcement
Use treats, praise, and play to reward your pet for good behaviour. Positive reinforcement encourages him to repeat the desired behaviour. Be consistent with your commands and rewards. Start with basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “down.” Puppies have short attention spans, so keep the training sessions brief and fun. Ensure everyone in the household uses the same commands and rewards to avoid confusing your pet.
Pawsitive structure and routine
Dogs thrive on routine. Establish a consistent daily schedule for feeding, walks, playtime, and training sessions. Use the same words and hand signals for commands to help your pet understand what is expected. Dogs learn through repetition. Practice commands regularly and be patient as your furry friend learns new skills.
Swift solutions to bad behaviour
Address unwanted behaviours such as jumping, nipping, and overenthusiastic greetings every time they occur. For example, if your pet jumps up when you come home, ignore him until he calms down, then provide positive reinforcement. When dealing with nipping or biting, react as if in pain by loudly saying “OUCH,” which typically startles puppies into stopping. If this doesn’t work, redirect their attention by swapping your hand for a toy or bone.
Mastering the art of crate training
Use a crate as a safe space for your pet, focusing on comfort with bedding and toys. To maintain his willingness to use the crate, never use it as punishment. Encourage him with treats placed inside, using a cheerful tone to command “go to bed.” Repeat until he associates the command with entering calmly. Gradually introduce your pet to the crate, starting with short periods and increasing the time spent inside.
Tugging no more with the right leash training
Use a sturdy leash and a comfortable collar or harness. Avoid retractable leashes, as they can be harder to control. Teach your pet to walk on a loose leash by rewarding him when he walks by your side. Stop walking if he pulls, and resume once he returns to your side.
Mental stimulation for mindful mutts
Use puzzle toys and games to challenge your pet’s mind and keep him mentally stimulated. Incorporate fun training games like hide-and-seek or obstacle courses to make learning enjoyable. Teach fun tricks like “rollover” or “shake hands” to keep training enjoyable and strengthen your bond.
Turn mealtime into an interactive experience by scattering the kibble in the backyard, hiding it in a rolled-out towel, or placing it in boxes around the house for a stimulating scavenger hunt. These activities engage your furry friend’s senses, encourage instincts, and foster a stronger bond between you and your pet.
Raising a well-behaved dog involves time, patience, and consistency. Remember, training is a continuous process, and regular practice is the key to his obedience!
