Your pet needs extra care and attention to stay comfortable and safe in cold months. Here are some winter care tips for you to follow to keep your pet snug and safe!

Fueling Fido with Bowlful of Health

It’s easy to overlook hydration in the winter since cooler temperatures can make us and our pets feel less thirsty. However, your pet still needs a constant supply of fresh water. Dogs can easily get dehydrated in winter, especially if the air indoors is dry due to heating.

Diet plays an important role in maintaining your pet’s overall health and well-being. Feed small, frequent, nutrient-rich meals to puppies to support their growth and high-energy needs. For senior dogs, opt for a balanced diet with joint-supportive nutrients, and avoid winter weight gain that can strain their joints. Ask your vet to recommend specialized food and joint supplements (if needed).

If you care for stray dogs in your area, try to provide extra food and fresh water in a safe, accessible area.

Lookout for Weight Woes

Both puppies and senior dogs are prone to winter weight changes. Puppies may gain weight as they grow, while senior dogs may gain weight due to reduced mobility. Stray dogs, on the other hand, may lose weight as they burn more energy. So, adjust your pet’s diet accordingly. You can take the help of your vet to know the perfect portion size or a specialized weight management food for your furry friend.

Creature Comfort Redefined

Limit outdoor time, as many dogs are vulnerable to the cold, especially those with short coats or lean bodies. When temperatures drop, limit your pet’s time outside and ensure they have a warm and safe space indoors. Change the walk time to afternoon, so that your pet can get his daily dose of sunlight.

If your home is prone to be quite cold, think about using a heating pad safe for pets or a heated dog bed. Make sure that any heating devices or pads made for warmth are specially intended for pets and include automatic shut-off mechanisms to avoid overheating.

Make sure your pet’s bed is comfortable and located in a draft-free area of your home. Beds raised slightly off cold floor and layered with extra blankets, can keep your furry friend warm and comfortable. For older dogs, orthopedic beds can be especially beneficial for added comfort and joint support.

Awesome ‘Paw’some Care

The cold weather can dry out and crack your pet’s paw pads. Applying a pet-safe paw balm before walks can help create a barrier and prevent damage. Ensure that you trim his paw hair for overall hygiene. To prevent flaky or dry skin, you can apply coconut oil (make sure to ask your vet about it).

Dog boots are a great way to protect your furry friend’s paws (if he tolerates wearing them). Choose boots with non-slip soles and adequate insulation.

Snug and Stylish in this Sweater Weather

For short-haired, small, or senior dogs, jackets or sweaters provide extra warmth. Look for waterproof options and a fabric that dries up quickly. If you live in an area with extreme cold, you can layer a sweater under a waterproof coat to maximize insulation for your pet, especially when stepping out for a walk.

Safe Havens for Streeties

Use cardboard boxes, old blankets, bedsheets etc. to create a cozy shelter for strays in winter. Place these slightly above

ground level so it is not cold. Provide food and fresh water. If possible, serve food that is warm, this can provide extra comfort. Provide fresh water for them so that they are hydrated.

Keep an eye on puppies and older dogs as they are vulnerable to cold and may need extra warmth and food.

With the right precautions, you can ensure your pet stays healthy and comfortable throughout the winter. Remember that every dog is unique—puppies, senior dogs, and certain breeds have specific winter needs, so adjust your care routine accordingly. By prioritizing warmth, monitoring his health, and creating a safe cocoon, you can make this season enjoyable and stress-free for both you and your furry friend.
