So, you brought home a new member, a four-legged one! We know how cute she looks sleeping and running around! But if you are a first-time pet parent, there are some things you should know.
Raising a puppy can be challenging, especially if you are new to it. They need special care and attention just like a human baby. Here is a handy parenting guide for all the first-timers!
Paws-itive Beginnings
Before welcoming the new pet to your home, make sure you have bought all the essential supplies. Depending upon the age and size of your puppy, purchase dog food, treats, collar, leash, and food/ water bowls. You cannot forget a comfortable bed, bedding, toys, and other essential grooming and wellness requirements.
Once she is home, a visit to a veterinarian is a must. It is very important to consult a veterinarian on the very first day when you bring home a puppy. Take recommendations on what you can feed her, ask about vaccinations, when you can start taking your furry friend out for a walk, and most importantly, get a thorough medical examination done.
Woof Wisdom – Pet-proof your home
Just like infants, puppies also go through the phase of teething. They are curious to explore their new house and end up chewing furniture, shoes, and household items. While doing so, your pet can hurt her teeth and gums, or even choke on various unimaginable things. Therefore, make sure you keep all the items that can be dangerous to your pet’s health out of her reach and surround the little one with enough toys and healthy treats that she can chew.
Pro advice on puppy care
Since you are new to the world of pet parenting, it is better to talk to those who have already gone through this phase! Taking care and being responsible for a puppy’s well-being can get intimidating and overwhelming at times. Talking to other pet parents would help you understand things clearly and give a new perspective on responsible pet parenting.
Roars and rules go hand-in-hand
Your puppy’s adorable eyes might silently plead with you for anything and melt your heart within seconds, but remember to set some rules from the beginning. Resist the temptation to share your food with her, and stick to her feeding schedule. Talk to your vet and ask about the right time to start toilet training. Also, if you are not comfortable with your pet sitting on your sofas or bed, do not allow her to do it from the first day.
It is all a learning process, but the unlimited joy and love that you are in for will certainly fill your heart! From blankets to bowls, it will be an all-new experience! So, get, set, and prep!!!
