The Road to the White Coat

My Journey of Becoming a Veterinarian

After the NEET (The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination, just like most aspirants I was also tensed about the result. After all the hard work and effort, I got into my dream veterinary course at Apollo Veterinary College and Hospital, Jaipur. Since childhood, I have been interested in animals – their treatment and surgeries, behavioural changes, and how they express their love through their actions.

Veterinary is a word that originated from the Latin word Veterinae, meaning working animals. Isn’t it fascinating to learn about different types of species, their structural framework, and their working mechanisms? Our patients can’t speak to us, but they can express themselves through emotions and body language. I believe that veterinary science has not gotten its due share in terms of awareness, and the mindset of people towards veterinarians as a profession hasn’t changed. But I am glad to say that the situation is now changing, and we are seeing rapid developments and innovations in this field.

I joined Apollo Veterinary College, Jaipur, Rajasthan. For the first time, I went out to a completely new state and city, leaving my hometown. During the initial days, life wasn’t easy. I was juggling overwhelming thoughts and mixed emotions. On one hand, I was happy to start a new chapter of my life, I could pursue my career in the profession that I had dreamt of since my childhood. But on the other hand, I was nervous about surviving in a new city without my family and managing everything alone. It was during that time that I learnt the biggest lesson of life, ‘Family’ and the importance of our family staying with us on our side. Slowly, I settled into college and hostel life. Soon classes started, and I still remember my first day at the anatomy lab, everywhere there were bones of different animals. Pricking blood, preparing its smear, and observing it under the microscope. Visit to farm to observe and study animal behaviour, their care and management. I enjoyed the hustle and being busy doing what I had always dreamed of. On days when I was overwhelmed and think of going back home, I remember how grateful I am for living my dream of becoming a veterinarian.
