Taught by a Tail: Life Lessons from an Abandoned Doggo
Brownie was abandoned when he was just three months old. Like many Indie dogs in India, he was left on the streets without care, shelter, and a family. But what makes Brownie’s story different is what happened next.

He was not alone for long. The people in our neighbourhood took him in, not into their homes, but into their hearts. They shared their food with him, gave him water, and called him by name. He still lived on the streets, but he had people who looked out for him. A female Indie dog also became his guide. She taught him how to navigate the chaos of the road, where to find food, how to avoid danger, and when to stay quiet.
Love Found on the Streets
Brownie grew up with an amalgamation of both fear and strength. He learned how to fight for himself and survive, but he also learned to trust. He became friendly and alert, but cautious with strangers. He understood the balance between love and survival, something most of us struggle with.
Years later, my family moved onto the same street. They met Brownie for the first time, and slowly, he became a part of our home too. He would sleep outside our gate and come to us when he needed help and love.
Rescued is My Favourite Breed
In 2023, when I moved back from Sydney, Brownie became officially mine. I did not adopt a dog; I finally gave a name to a relationship that already existed: a bond built over years of trust and shared space. Brownie had survived the worst, and now he had a home and a bed to rest. Over time, we became his people.
But in reality, he rescued me. Brownie has taught me more than any human has. He has shown me what it means to stay strong when the world turns its back on you. He has shown me how to be patient and watchful. And most importantly, he has taught me how to love unconditionally. He remembers every person who has shown him kindness, and he greets them with a wagging tail, even years later.
Indies – The Pawfect Combination of Charm and Courage
Indie dogs like Brownie are some of the most intelligent, loyal, and low-maintenance companions one can have. They are adapted to harsh climates, require very little grooming, and rarely fall ill. But more than that, they carry a quiet strength within them. A strength that only comes from surviving and still choosing to trust.
But not all dogs are as lucky as Brownie. Many never find kindness. They live and die on the streets without ever knowing what it feels like to be safe or loved. That is where we need to step up. If you have the space, the time, or even just the heart, consider rescuing or adopting an Indie or abandoned dog. You won’t just be giving them a second chance. You’ll be receiving something even greater in return.
